Mexico and U.S. postpone USMCA trade talks until October
Mexico and the United States have agreed to postpone the fourth bilateral round of USMCA negotiations until October. Luis Rosendo Gutiérrez Romano, Mexico's Undersecretary of Foreign Trade, indicated that the delay is due to conflicting international schedules, including the upcoming G20 ministerial meeting and the scheduled visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the United States.
Despite the postponement, officials noted that daily constructive work continues with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR). A primary focus for the Mexican government remains the reduction of tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automotive products under Section 232.
Mexican officials stated they are following instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum to negotiate with “cold heads” and firmness, prioritizing the defense of national sovereignty while seeking regional collaboration. The Mexican side expressed optimism regarding the receptivity of U.S. officials and the potential for positive results in the coming weeks.
