Mexico and US relations face strategic reconfiguration
The bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States is undergoing a strategic reconfiguration, focusing on security, trade, and legal certainty. Amidst pressures from Washington regarding narcotics trafficking, Mexican Senator Manlio Fabio Beltrones has proposed structural reforms to the Bicentennial Framework. These include the institutionalization of the relationship through a permanent, neutral Binational Technical Secretariat to move away from unilateral evaluations.
At the Fifth Binational Convention of the American Society, discussions highlighted that the partnership extends beyond tariff disputes to include financial intelligence, supply chains, energy, and the upcoming USMCA review. Ambassador Ronald Johnson emphasized that effective cooperation requires working alongside governments rather than attempting to substitute them, advocating for a sovereign Mexico free from criminal organizations.
The administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum faces the challenge of balancing national sovereignty with the need for close coordination between security institutions like SEDENA, SEMAR, and the SSPC to address organized crime and financial flows.
