Mexico and U.S. sign defense pact for drone technology access

Mexico and the United States have signed a Statement of Intent to strengthen defense capabilities through innovation and new technologies. The agreement, formalized on August 11, allows Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) to access the U.S. Army’s digital market. This access enables the acquisition of unmanned aerial systems (drones) and anti-drone technologies at competitive prices.

U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson stated that this cooperation is intended to bolster the ability of both nations to combat organized crime and cartels. The agreement marks a significant shift in bilateral security, as it is the first time the Pentagon has agreed to sell such drone technology to Mexico specifically for combating criminal organizations.

In a related development, U.S. authorities confirmed the return of three fugitives sought in Mexico to Mexican authorities in a single day. The individuals include a member of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) wanted for firearms charges in Guanajuato, a fugitive wanted for homicide in Zacatecas, and an individual wanted for fraud.
