Mexico and Venezuela sign agreements to enhance migrant and refugee protections
Mexico and Venezuela have entered into new agreements aimed at improving the protection and rights of migrants and refugees.
In Mexico, the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) and the Ministry of the Interior (Segob) signed a pact to strengthen assistance for individuals transiting, seeking refuge, or establishing residency along the southern border. The agreement focuses on information exchange, training, and human rights research to address the vulnerabilities faced by mobile populations. The initiative was signed by CNDH President Rosario Piedra and Antonio Hazael Ruiz Ortega of the Coordination for Integral Attention to Migration in the Southern Border (CAIMFS).
In Venezuela, the Ombudsman's Office and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) signed a memorandum of understanding to bolster technical and operational cooperation. This partnership aims to improve mechanisms for assisting refugees, stateless persons, and returnees, with a specific focus on vulnerable communities. The agreement seeks to facilitate access to justice and prevent statelessness. This follows recent discussions regarding the voluntary return and reintegration of the approximately 6.9 million Venezuelans currently residing in Latin America and the Caribbean.
