Mexico announces 12.5 billion peso desalination plant for Baja California

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a 12.5 billion peso investment for the Playas de Rosarito Desalination Plant in Baja California. The project is a priority under the National Water Plan and aims to strengthen the potable water supply for Tijuana, Rosarito, and Ensenada.

The plant's initial module will have a capacity of 2,200 liters per second, benefiting approximately 994,000 residents in the southwest zone of Tijuana and Playas de Rosarito. The project seeks to reduce the region's dependence on the Colorado River and provide a reliable source for domestic use, health services, commerce, and industrial activities.

Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda has been a key proponent of the project since 2021. In addition to the desalination plant, the federal and state governments are coordinating efforts for the sanitation of the Tijuana River and the modernization of the District of Irrigation 014 Río Colorado.
