Mexico auto sector posts mixed June 2026 performance as exports fall 9%

In June 2026 Mexico’s automotive industry recorded a 9.2% decline in vehicle exports, with the United States absorbing almost 80% of the shipments. Overall vehicle production slipped 1.9% year‑on‑year.

Heavy‑duty vehicles, however, showed strong growth. Retail sales of heavy vehicles rose 3.9% YoY to 3,194 units, production increased 7.6% to 15,262 units, and exports grew 3.2% to 12,730 units. The surge was linked to demand generated by the 2026 World Cup, a modest recovery in the U.S. market, and fiscal incentives under the government’s Plan México that allow accelerated depreciation for new vehicles.

Audi and Volkswagen raised their production output in Mexico during the first half of 2026, while in Coahuila local exporters resisted the national export slump and Stellantis offset a slowdown at General Motors.
