Mexico automotive market projected to reach record 1.7 million vehicle sales
The Mexican automotive market is experiencing significant shifts in sales trends and consumer preferences. According to estimates from the Asociación Mexicana de Distribuidores de Automotores (AMDA), light vehicle sales in Mexico are projected to reach a record 1.7 million units by the end of 2026.
There is a notable change in the origin of vehicles sold in the country. While domestic manufacturing previously held a larger market share, the presence of imported vehicles is rising. Specifically, the sale of cars manufactured in Mexico decreased by 4% in the domestic market, while imports grew by 10%, driven largely by preference for Chinese brands. As of July 2026, imported units accounted for 67.4% of sales, originating from countries such as China, Brazil, India, the United States, and Japan.
Additionally, the fleet segment remains a vital component of business mobility. In 2025, 245,924 light vehicles were sold for fleets, representing 16.1% of all new vehicle sales in Mexico. Industry experts emphasize that fleet purchasing decisions are increasingly focused on the total cost of operation, including fuel consumption, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation, rather than just the initial acquisition price.
