Global automotive trends and Latin American market shifts

Overview

The global automotive industry is transitioning toward hybrid and electric vehicles amid shifting regional dynamics. While U.S. light-vehicle sales have stabilized, Chinese manufacturers are aggressively expanding exports to Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. In Latin America, Nissan has reached a milestone, surpassing one million units sold since consolidating regional operations in November 2023, with a goal of 500,000 units in fiscal year 2027. Sales remain concentrated in Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina.

Mexico continues to serve as a strategic production hub, though its light vehicle segment has faced contraction. While automotive exports experienced a slight 2.2% decline in August 2026, the country recorded a significant trade surplus of $605.4 million for that month, driven by a 40.4% surge in total exports. This growth was largely fueled by a 122.3% increase in electrical and electronic equipment exports. For the first eight months of 2026, Mexico’s cumulative trade surplus reached $9.86 billion, representing a sharp reversal from the deficit recorded during the same period in 2025.

Despite these trade gains, Mexico’s economic outlook remains cautious. The World Bank projects 2026 economic growth to reach approximately 1.4%, trailing the 2.2% average expected for Latin America and the Caribbean. This slowdown is attributed to weak domestic demand, investment uncertainty, and lost momentum in major public infrastructure projects. Recent projections reinforce this outlook, with the World Bank citing restrictive monetary conditions and policy uncertainty as factors for Mexico’s modest 1.4% growth forecast. To bolster long-term competitiveness, the business group Coparmex has aligned with IMF recommendations, calling for reduced public debt and increased investment certainty.
