Mexico boosts electric vehicle charging network and launches 578 MW renewable power projects in 2026

Mexico’s electric‑vehicle charging infrastructure continued rapid growth in the first half of 2026, reaching a total of 60,932 connections – a 17.5% increase over the same period in 2025. Public charging points rose to 4,653, up 27% year‑on‑year, including 1,592 direct‑current fast chargers and 3,061 alternating‑current units. Private sites accounted for 56,279 connections, with 45,238 home chargers installed; 90% of homeowners reported installation costs below 25,000 pesos.

In parallel, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and Cubico Sustainable Investments announced a new renewable‑energy programme that will add 578 MW of solar and wind capacity and 175.7 MW of battery power (about 500 MWh of storage) beginning in late 2026. The projects span Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Campeche and the Yucatán Peninsula, with construction of the Altamira Solar plant slated for December 2026 and four additional plants expected in early 2027. San Luis Potosí already hosts 574 MW of installed renewable capacity, comprising 300 MW of wind, 205 MW of solar PV, 49 MW of bioenergy and 20 MW of hydro, contributing to the state’s total 3,620 MW electricity mix.
