Mexico braced for heavy rains and strong winds as atypical cold front sweeps the country

An unusual cold front is expected to move across Mexico in June, bringing intense thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and wind gusts of up to 80 km/h. The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional warned that the front will interact with low‑pressure systems and moisture from the Pacific, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, producing very strong rain in states such as Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo, Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas, with a risk of urban flooding, landslides and rising river levels.

Simultaneously, tropical wave 7 will travel south of the coasts of Michoacán and Colima, while tropical wave 8 approaches the Yucatán Peninsula, reinforcing heavy rain forecasts for western, southern and southeastern regions, including Chiapas, Guerrero and the Yucatán states. Temperatures are expected to drop temporarily in the north‑east, especially in Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila and Nuevo León, while the northwest will remain hot. Authorities have urged the public to stay informed and take precautions against flooding, wind‑blown debris and reduced visibility on roads.
