Mexico braces for extreme heat and heavy rains amid monsoon and Tropical Wave 24
The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional warned that a combination of the Mexican monsoon and Tropical Wave 24 will bring extreme weather to Mexico on 5 August 2026. Temperatures are forecast to exceed 45 °C in Baja California and Sonora, with a heat wave affecting Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Oaxaca and Chiapas. In Mazatlán, the heat index could reach 42 °C. Heavy rainfall of 50‑75 mm is expected in Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Durango, Nayarit, Jalisco, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas, while many other states will see strong to moderate showers. The CNPC urged residents to reinforce preventive measures, warning of flood, landslide and river‑rise risks. Quintana Roo will experience moderate impacts, with temperatures of 35‑40 °C and isolated showers. Two low‑pressure areas in the Pacific are being monitored for possible development into tropical cyclones.
