Mexico calls for increased climate finance at PreCOP31
At the PreCOP31 preparatory meeting held in Nadi, Fiji, from October 5 to 8, the Mexican delegation called for increased international financing to combat climate change and meet global warming limits. Led by Enrique Ochoa, the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Mexico emphasized the necessity of translating international commitments into tangible resources to maintain the goal of limiting global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
During the negotiations, Mexico presented its updated climate strategies, specifically the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) and the National Adaptation Plan, ADAPTA-MX. The delegation advocated for climate action based on scientific evidence, with a focus on protecting oceans, conserving biodiversity, and supporting vulnerable populations.
Mexico also engaged in dialogues with Pacific Island nations, which are highly susceptible to rising sea levels, and facilitated roundtables on a just transition to ensure international efforts are not duplicated.
