Mexico Chamber of Deputies reviews dual nationality reform

The Mexican Chamber of Deputies has referred reform initiatives sent by President Claudia Sheinbaum to various commissions. One key proposal seeks to amend Articles 82, 116, and 122 of the Constitution to prohibit candidates for the Presidency of the Republic, local governments, and the Head of Government of Mexico City from holding or acquiring another nationality. Under this reform, such individuals would be required to renounce any foreign nationality prior to registering as candidates.

Cendy Robles, a national political commissioner for the Labor Party (PT), expressed support for debating regulations regarding dual nationality for public servants. Robles emphasized that those seeking to govern and manage public resources must have a clearly defined Mexican status. She specifically cited former Tamaulipas Governor Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca, suggesting that politicians facing legal issues in Mexico should not be able to rely on U.S. nationality to evade accountability.

Robles noted that while the issue is delicate, reforms should distinguish between citizens with dual nationality by birth and those exercising political functions. The legislative process aims to ensure that those managing the nation's resources are fully committed to their Mexican identity.
