Mexico City AICM to install 16 CT scanners for security
The Benito Juárez Mexico City International Airport (AICM) is modernizing its security checkpoints by installing 16 computerized tomography (CT) scanners. This initiative, part of the second stage of the airport's comprehensive remodeling, aims to streamline carry-on luggage inspections and facilitate passenger transit across both terminals.
The new technology provides high-resolution three-dimensional images, allowing security personnel to examine bag contents from multiple angles to better detect threats such as explosives. A significant benefit for travelers is that, at equipped checkpoints, passengers may no longer need to remove laptops, electronic devices, or permitted liquids (up to 100 ml) from their carry-on bags during inspection.
Installation began on October 15, 2026, and is scheduled to continue through late November 2026. The rollout is being conducted in stages to minimize operational disruptions. The first intervention took place at Filter D, located between gates 5 and 6 in the national zone of Terminal 1. Because the implementation is gradual, passengers are advised to follow specific instructions from security personnel, as not all checkpoints will feature the new technology simultaneously.
