Mexico City International Airport operations
Overview
The Benito Juárez Mexico City International Airport (AICM) is undergoing various operational and security developments. As part of a comprehensive remodeling project, the airport began installing 16 computerized tomography (CT) scanners on October 15, 2026. This technology is intended to modernize security checkpoints by providing high-resolution 3D images, allowing passengers to potentially leave electronics and liquids inside their bags during inspections. The rollout is being conducted in stages through late November 2026 to minimize disruptions, with the first installation occurring at Filter D in Terminal 1.
Separately, federal authorities intercepted six archaeological pieces at the airport that were being prepared for export to Great Britain. Originating from Veracruz, the items were identified by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) as protected national cultural heritage. The pieces are currently being held by authorities pending investigation by the Attorney General's Office (FGR).
In a separate security incident at Terminal 2, authorities seized approximately 10 kilograms of substances from a passenger arriving from Miami, United States. X-ray inspections and canine detection identified the cargo as morphine and pseudoephedrine, a chemical precursor. The passenger has been detained for further investigation by the Federal Public Ministry.
