Mexico City and Irapuato placed on red rain alert as heavy storms cause flooding

Mexico's civil protection agency activated a Red Alert for Cuajimalpa in Mexico City on Friday, July 3, 2026, warning of 50‑70 mm of rain and hail between 17:40 and 22:00 and urging residents to avoid travel, protect documents and heed emergency numbers.

Municipal authorities in Irapuato, Guanajuato, said rain will persist for about 45 days with moderate to strong intensity. They highlighted a recent 85 mm event, urged the public to stay away from flooded streets, keep storm drains clear, and noted a program that has cleaned more than 10,000 drains and removed over 100 tons of debris.

Residents of the Altamira subdivision in Irapuato reported that newly built drainage works, only one to two years old, are leaking water through manholes each time it rains, causing puddles, foul odors and concerns about future inundation of homes. They are demanding inspections and repairs from municipal officials.
