Mexico City sees widespread traffic jams as protests and Hoy No Circula restrictions hit July 30

On Thursday, 30 July 2026, the capital’s streets were heavily disrupted. The Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana reported eleven coordinated protests across the city, including gatherings at the Zócalo, the Tabacalera, Polanco, and other neighborhoods, which blocked key avenues and reduced average vehicle speeds by about 35 %. Heavy rain brought 15–25 mm of precipitation, flooding eight major intersections and further slowing traffic. At the same time, the Hoy No Circula program barred vehicles with green stickers and plates ending in 1 or 2 from circulating in all 16 boroughs of Mexico City and 18 adjoining municipalities in the State of Mexico. Violations carry fines of 20–30 times the UMA. The combined effect caused congestion, detours, and delayed metro services, with trains on several lines adding up to six minutes to their usual travel times. Authorities warned commuters to use alternative routes and anticipate longer travel times throughout the day.
