Building collapse during demolition disrupts Mexico City traffic

In Mexico City, a building undergoing demolition in the Escandón neighborhood collapsed on Tuesday morning, causing significant disruption to the Viaducto Miguel Alemán. The incident occurred at the intersection of Minería and Viaducto, where the structure, managed by the company Raíces Houston S.A. de C.V., fell and caused a 20-meter tree to collapse onto the roadway. The debris damaged a vehicle and a motorcycle, and blocked several lanes of the major thoroughfare. Authorities, including the Secretaría de Gestión Integral de Riesgos y Protección Civil (SGIRPC), confirmed that while the collapse was substantial, there were no reported fatalities or serious injuries among the 15 workers on site or commuters. The Mayor of Miguel Hidalgo, Mauricio Tabe, stated that the demolition had a valid license but noted that “something failed,” and indicated that the construction company and the Responsible Works Director (DRO) must assume technical and civil responsibility. Investigations by the Fiscalía General de Justicia are underway to determine if safety protocols were breached.

Separately, in the Zamora Chinchipe province of Ecuador, a landslide in the San Carlos de las Minas mining area resulted in the deaths of two people and caused material damage to several pieces of heavy machinery, including three excavators.
