Overview

A building undergoing demolition in the Escandón neighborhood of Mexico City collapsed on Tuesday morning, causing significant disruption to the Viaducto Miguel Alemán thoroughfare. The structure, managed by Raíces Houston S.A. de C.V., fell and caused a 20-meter tree to collapse onto the roadway, damaging a vehicle and a motorcycle. While no fatalities or serious injuries were reported among the 15 workers or commuters, the Miguel Hidalgo Mayor, Mauricio Tabe, noted that “something failed” despite the project having a valid license.

Following the incident, Deputy Víctor Hugo Romo announced plans to file a formal complaint with the Mexico City Prosecutor's Office. Romo is calling for investigations into Mayor Tabe and Government Director César Garrido, alleging the collapse may be linked to suspected irregularities involving a ‘real estate cartel’ in the municipality. The deputy questioned the authorization and supervision of the demolition, arguing that because authorities granted the necessary permits, they must be held accountable for ensuring the work was conducted safely.
