Mexico commemorates 58th anniversary of Tlatelolco massacre

Thousands of people marched through Mexico City to commemorate the 58th anniversary of the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre. The demonstrations, led by survivors and organizations like Committee 68, moved from the Plaza de las Tres Culturas toward the Zócalo to demand truth, justice, and the reactivation of judicial processes against those responsible, which have been stalled since 2009.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo expressed solidarity with the victims, stating that the state must never again repress social movements. She noted that the Mexican government officially recognized the 1968 massacre as a crime against humanity in 2024. Additionally, the Ministry of the Interior has been instructed to issue a public apology to the victims and their families.

In other regions, such as Toluca, students from UAEMex marched to honor the 1968 victims while also demanding justice for the 43 students disappeared in Ayotzinapa in 2014. During the Mexico City marches, reports emerged of violence, including allegations that police and individuals in civilian clothing assaulted journalists and protesters, resulting in approximately 19 injuries and the theft of equipment from reporters.
