Mexico City Tlatelolco massacre commemorations

Overview

On the 58th anniversary of the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre, thousands of demonstrators marched through Mexico City and Toluca to demand justice and preserve historical memory. Led by survivors and organizations such as Comité 68, the marches moved from the Plaza de las Tres Culturas toward the Zócalo. Participants also expressed solidarity with the 43 students disappeared in Ayotzinapa in 2014.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reaffirmed the state’s commitment to preventing the repression of social movements, stating that “never again will the State repress a social movement.” This follows the 2024 official recognition of the 1968 events as a crime against humanity, which identified former President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz as a primary responsible party and instructed the Ministry of the Interior to issue a public apology to the victims and their families. She also spoke in favor of state responsibility for the events of October 2, 1968.

In Mexico City, Mayor Clara Brugada Molina affirmed the city government's support for demands regarding truth and reparation. However, the commemorations were marked by reports of tension. Approximately 8,000 demonstrators, including students, unions, and social organizations, called for a comprehensive examination of state repression against the 1968 movement. Reports emerged of violence, including allegations that police and individuals in civilian clothing assaulted journalists and protesters, resulting in approximately 19 injuries and the theft of equipment from reporters. The Mexico City Security Secretariat (SSC) has launched investigations into these reported incidents, including the alleged assault and robbery of journalist Iván Ortiz near the Tlatelolco Metro station.
