Mexico City expands motorcycle safety training amid accident reports

Mexico City authorities and legislators are focusing on improving road safety for motorcyclists following data showing a 6.4% decrease in motorcycle-related accidents in 2026. Despite this decline, the C5 Command Center reported 14,713 emergency calls related to motorcycle accidents during the year, noting that motorcyclists are 15 times more likely to be involved in an incident than car drivers.

To address these risks, the Mexico City Congress has proposed that the Ministry of Mobility (SEMOVI) and the city's 16 boroughs designate permanent or periodic spaces for the ‘Motoescuela CDMX’ program. This initiative provides theoretical and practical training to improve riding skills and reduce accidents. Between 2022 and early 2025, the program has trained 2,486 individuals.

Local motorcycle collectives, such as the Comité Motor CDMX, are collaborating with authorities to promote traffic rule compliance and prevention. Officials emphasize that up to 90% of these incidents could be avoided through better civic culture and adherence to transit regulations.
