Mexico motorcycle road safety initiatives
Overview
In response to rising motorcycle-related accidents, Mexican authorities have emphasized the need for stricter safety enforcement and improved rider education.
Initial reports from regions such as Soledad de Graciano Sánchez and Tamaulipas highlighted dangerous driving behaviors, including weaving through traffic and carrying multiple passengers. Officials in these areas called for mandatory helmet use, stricter registration controls, and informative campaigns to improve road safety.
In Mexico City, efforts have shifted toward educational initiatives. While data showed a 6.4% decrease in motorcycle accidents in 2026, the C5 Command Center reported 14,713 emergency calls related to such incidents, noting that motorcyclists are 15 times more likely to be involved in accidents than car drivers. To mitigate these risks, the Mexico City Congress proposed expanding the ‘Motoescuela CDMX’ program, which provides theoretical and practical training. Local motorcycle collectives are also collaborating with authorities to promote compliance with transit regulations.
