Mexico City leads COVID-19 case surge in 2026

In 2026 Mexico reported 709 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 21 deaths. The Mexico City metropolitan area accounted for 37.1% of all cases (420) and had the highest number of infections, while the state of Hidalgo recorded the most fatalities (six). National test positivity rose to 17.8% in epidemiological week 26. The age groups with the most cases were 25‑29, 30‑34 and 40‑44, and women made up 58.5% of infections. Health officials warned that the virus continues to circulate and evolve, keeping people with chronic conditions, older adults and those with diabetes, hypertension, obesity or cardiovascular disease at higher risk. An updated vaccine is expected to be authorized for the winter 2026‑27 season pending regulatory approval.
