Mexico City opens Templo de Ehécatl-Quetzalcóatl to public

The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) is allowing limited public access to the Templo de Ehécatl‑Quetzalcóatl and a section of the ancient Juego de Pelota at the Temple of the Mayor in Mexico City. Guided tours run Tuesday to Saturday at 9:30, 11:00 and 12:00, with groups capped at 15 visitors to protect the fragile remains. Registration is required; visits are free but participants must pay the standard 105‑peso entry fee to the Temple Mayor museum.

The temporary opening is part of the Social World Cup 2026 cultural programme and will run until 19 July 2026. Organisers stress that the measure aims to balance public education with ongoing archaeological research and conservation.

Claudia Curiel de Icaza, secretary of Culture, explained that the initiative seeks to guarantee “the right to memory and access to cultural heritage” while showcasing Mexico‑Tenochtitlan’s ritual practices.
