Mexico heritage upgrades, repatriation and INAH controversy

Overview

President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration has kept expanding cultural‑heritage investment. After the Museo de la Grandeza Teotihuacana reopened on 9 June 2026, a 37 million‑peso upgrade of the Teotihuacan zone added new access routes, signage, shaded walkways and security upgrades, while a 7‑million‑peso museum refurbishment now displays 174 artifacts—most unseen before—and drew over 25,000 visitors in its first month. The Culture Secretariat’s “Taller Original” programme trains artisans whose work is sold at the Los Pinos Cultural Complex. INAH reports a ten‑fold rise in repatriated objects during Sheinbaum’s term, with 3,716 items returned, chiefly from the United States. Tourism data show Teotihuacan surpassing Chichén Itzá in May 2026 after the latter suffered a visitor decline following an 11‑day closure. In July 2026 INAH broadened archaeological work beyond the capital region. Researchers began carbon‑14 dating of artifacts from the Campo Viejo site in Coatepec, Veracruz, funded by federal deputy Adrián González Naveda, to refine the complex’s chronology and note similarities to the Izapa site in Chiapas. The institute also reopened the Xel Há zone in Tulum on 6 July, part of a state program improving visitor infrastructure, monument conservation and trail signage. Two new museums—the regional museum of the eastern coast of Tulum and the historical museum of Felipe Carrillo Puerto—opened alongside the Tren Maya project, with daily hours and a 210‑peso entry fee that includes discounts for residents, students, seniors and indigenous peoples. On 15 July 2026 INAH officials faced a criminal complaint filed by archaeologists and researchers demanding an investigation into alleged destruction of at least 47 Maya monuments during construction of the Parque de la Memoria Balam Tun.
