Mexico City permanent driver’s license program ends in 2026

The Mexico City government announced that the permanent driver’s licence program will cease after 2026. Finance Secretary Juan Pablo de Botton said the last licences can be issued through December 31, 2026, after which no new permanent licences will be offered. The programme, re‑activated by Mayor Clara Brugada in late 2024 and extended for a year in 2025, has issued more than 2.08 million licences, with 60 % processed at Treasury modules and about a quarter through a digital platform.

Applicants must present a valid ID, proof of residence, a paid capture line, a scheduled appointment and, for first‑time applicants, pass a theoretical exam. Those with multiple sanctions under the “Conduce sin alcohol” programme or with convictions for traffic crimes are ineligible. The cost is 1,500 pesos. The government urged residents to complete the process before the deadline to avoid last‑minute queues.
