Mexico City permanent driver’s license phase-out

In late July 2026 Mexico City officials confirmed that the permanent driver’s licence programme, re‑activated in late 2024 and extended through 2025, will end after 31 December 2026. By that date more than two million permanent licences will have been issued, generating revenue earmarked for public‑transport and mobility projects. The government urged residents to complete applications before the deadline, noting the licence’s one‑time cost and eligibility restrictions. A follow‑up notice also highlighted that the closure applies nationally, with the State Coordination of Licences in Chihuahua urging residents to renew existing licences or apply for new ones during the holiday period.

The programme, which has processed the majority of licences through Treasury modules and a digital platform, will cease to offer any new permanent licences after the cut‑off, leaving motorists to rely on standard, renewable licences.
