Mexico City police warn of fake account recovery scams
The Cyber Police of the Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) has issued an alert regarding fraudulent “hackers” who target users with false promises of social media account recovery. These criminals use posts, direct messages, or digital group advertisements to gain trust by claiming specialized knowledge or internal access to platforms.
Once trust is established, scammers demand upfront payments, passwords, verification codes, or other sensitive data. Instead of restoring access, they often steal the money or use the stolen information to seize control of other accounts. Authorities advise using only official recovery tools, enabling two-step authentication, and never sharing passwords or temporary codes with third parties.
To report these incidents, citizens can contact the SSC Cyber Police via telephone or email.
