Mexico City police warn of military impersonation romantic fraud

The Mexico City Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) has issued an alert regarding a ‘romantic fraud’ scheme targeting users on social media and dating applications. Criminals are creating fake profiles by impersonating members of the Armed Forces, using military uniforms, ranks, and insignia to establish a false sense of legitimacy and trust.

The scammers typically accelerate emotional connections to build intimacy quickly. They often claim to be stationed in conflict zones, on international missions, or in remote locations to explain why they cannot meet in person or participate in video calls. Once trust is established, the perpetrators request money for various pretexts, such as medical emergencies, travel expenses, or official procedures, often requesting payments via bank transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.

Authorities advise citizens to be wary of strangers who attempt to establish rapid romantic relationships and to avoid sharing sensitive information, such as bank details, passwords, or official documents. The Cyber Police Unit recommends verifying profile photos and immediately cutting contact if a profile is suspected to be fraudulent.
