Romance fraud schemes in Mexico

Overview

Authorities in Mexico have issued warnings and initiated legal actions regarding various ‘romantic fraud’ schemes targeting individuals through social media and dating applications.

In Mexico City, the Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) alerted the public to criminals impersonating members of the Armed Forces. These scammers use military uniforms and insignia to build trust, often claiming to be stationed in remote or conflict zones to avoid video calls. Once an emotional connection is established, they solicit funds for purported medical emergencies or travel expenses via bank transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.

In the State of Mexico, law enforcement identified Alfonso N. as a suspect in a long-term fraud operation. Using multiple aliases on platforms such as Bumble and Tinder, the suspect allegedly targeted at least 15 women over a decade. Victims reported significant financial losses, with some losing up to 500,000 pesos after the suspect used various pretexts, including faking a kidnapping, to exploit their empathy.
