Alberto Jasso Cruz suicide after abuse allegation sparks Mexico debate

Alberto Israel Jasso Cruz, a 45‑year‑old professor at the Instituto de Educación Media Superior (IEMS) in Mexico City, was found dead by suicide on 21 July 2026. Six days earlier a student had filed a sexual‑abuse complaint against him, alleging multiple inappropriate touches that triggered an anxiety crisis.

Hours before his death Jasso recorded a three‑minute video posted on social media in which he denied the accusations, called the case a "rebellion" and a protest against what he described as a corrupt, biased justice system that fails to respect the presumption of innocence. He said he could not face the legal and social repercussions and that the process was destroying his personal and professional life.

The incident sparked a heated debate online and in the media about due process, the presumption of innocence, and the impact of public accusations on accused individuals. The IEMS workers’ union demanded a review of institutional protocols and better psychological support for both accusers and the accused. Mexican authorities continue to investigate both the alleged abuse and the circumstances of Jasso’s death.
