Mexico City sees drop in extortion crime and insecurity perception

The federal government reported a nationwide decline in extortion offenses, attributing the trend to coordinated operations such as “Operation Enjambre.” The operation led to the arrest of more than 85 public officials, including seven serving mayors, underscoring the administration’s anti‑corruption drive.

In Mexico City, the perception of insecurity fell for the second consecutive quarter, dropping from 61 % to 57 % according to city chief Clara Brugada. Authorities linked the improvement to an integrated security strategy that combines intelligence work, proximity policing, and social programs. Brugada said, “These results demonstrate that our comprehensive security strategy works and shows clear results. Peace is built by addressing causes with proximity police and intelligence.”
