Mexico City to close permanent driver’s license program by end of 2026

Mexico City officials announced that the permanent driver’s license program will cease after December 31 2026. Secretary of Administration and Finance Juan Pablo de Botton Falcón said more than two million permanent licenses have been issued since the program’s relaunch, and the revenue generated has been earmarked for public‑transport and mobility projects in the capital. The deadline marks the last chance for motorists to obtain a licence that does not require future renewals.

Separately, the State Coordination of Licenses in Chihuahua urged residents to use the holiday period to renew existing licences or apply for a first‑time licence at offices in Pueblito Mexicano, Mitla or El Mezquital. Required documents include a photo ID, birth certificate, proof of address and payment receipt; first‑time applicants must also schedule an appointment online and complete a theoretical‑practical course. The announcement listed fees for various licence categories, ranging from MXN 404 for a one‑year motorcycle licence to MXN 2,546 for a cargo‑transport licence.
