Mexico City to issue sustainable Pink Bond for gender equality projects

The Mexico City government has announced the issuance of its first sustainable Pink Bond, a financial instrument designed to raise funds for projects that promote gender equality and environmental sustainability. Juan Pablo de Botton, Secretary of Administration and Finance, presented the initiative during a hearing before the local Congress.

The bond has received certification from Sustainable Fitch to validate its sustainable and gender-focused characteristics. This move follows the city's previous success with Green Bonds, such as a 3,000 million peso issuance in 2025 used to fund new Cablebús lines.

The initiative aims to address significant social disparities, noting that according to the 2021 National Survey on Dynamics of Relationships in Households, 70.1% of women in Mexico have experienced violence. Additionally, data from the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness indicates a gender wage gap where women earn an average of 86 pesos for every 100 pesos earned by men.
