Mexico coastal communities fight to protect sea turtle nests

Conservation efforts are underway in various Mexican coastal regions to protect sea turtle nesting sites from poaching and environmental threats. In Mahahual, a committee of volunteers and fishermen is monitoring approximately 400 nests of green and hawksbill turtles along an 80-kilometer stretch of coastline. While volunteers have recorded 280 green turtle nests and 120 hawksbill nests, they face challenges due to limited resources and personnel.

In Puerto Arista, Chiapas, the Puerto Arista Beach Sanctuary reports the loss of approximately 1,000 nests annually, primarily due to illegal egg extraction. Although conservation camps protect over 80 percent of registered nests, poaching remains a persistent issue involving both locals and outsiders. Authorities, including the Secretariat of the Navy and the National Guard, are working to strengthen surveillance. Efforts to promote environmental education and economic alternatives for local families include events like the Fifth Sea and Turtle Festival.
