Mexico commemorates World Day for Audiovisual Heritage

Mexico's Secretariat of Culture, through the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE) and the Cineteca Nacional, is hosting a special program to commemorate World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. Running from October 27 to November 3, 2026, the initiative includes film screenings, premieres, and activities designed to promote the preservation and dissemination of the nation's filmic memory.

Seven titles from the IMCINE collection will be screened across eleven independent venues in nine states, as well as on public television and the digital platform Nuestro Cine MX. A central highlight of the program is the premiere of a restored version of the 1976 short documentary “Valle de México” by Rubén Gámez, which depicts the rapid urban growth of the region during the 1970s. The restoration was a collaborative effort between IMCINE and Estudios Churubusco.

Other featured works include “Un cuento de ciudad,” “Amada,” “El héroe,” “Hasta los huesos,” and “El fantasma del convento.” The program also includes a discussion titled “Where memory remains: preserving audiovisual heritage.”
