Mexican film and audiovisual heritage events

Overview

In October 2026, Mexico hosted several initiatives focused on documentary film and audiovisual preservation. The 21st DocsMX international documentary festival was scheduled for Mexico City, featuring 74 films across six sections, including the ‘Hecho en México’ section for local productions. Notable entries included ‘Hijas del bosque’, a documentary exploring the connection between fungal networks and indigenous knowledge.

Simultaneously, the Secretariat of Culture, the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE), and the Cineteca Nacional organized a program to commemorate World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. Running from late October through early November, the initiative involved screenings of seven titles from the IMCINE collection across eleven venues in nine states. A key component was the premiere of a restored version of the 1976 short documentary ‘Valle de México’, which documents the urban growth of the region during the 1970s.
