Mexico consumer trends: Profeco survey, private label growth, and Mattel performance
In Mexico, the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) has launched an online survey to determine which products and brands its National Consumer Protection Laboratory should analyze in 2027. The initiative seeks public input on categories such as food, beverages, hygiene products, electronics, and household cleaning supplies to ensure studies reflect consumer needs.
In the retail sector, private label brands in Mexico are seeing significant growth. Between March 2025 and March 2026, spending on private labels rose by 20.5 percent, while commercial brand spending grew by only 6.4 percent. Major retailers like Walmart de México, Soriana, Grupo La Comer, and Chedraui are expanding their segmented portfolios to compete across various price points, including premium segments.
In the toy industry, Mattel reported second-quarter 2026 net sales of $1.125 billion, a 10 percent increase year-over-year. This growth was driven largely by Hot Wheels, which saw a 14 percent increase in worldwide gross billings, contrasting with a double-digit decline in Barbie sales.
Additionally, Sam’s Club Mexico is running a promotion through October 15, 2026, offering winners the chance to attend the 2026 Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix, including Sky Box access and hospitality.
