Mexico tourist areas face cyclosporiasis outbreak after UK health alert
The United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued a health alert after detecting a sharp rise in cyclosporiasis cases among travelers returning from Mexico, recording 67 cases between late April and mid‑July, 48 of which had visited Cancun or the Riviera Maya. In response, Mexico's health authorities, including the Secretaría de Salud and Cofepris, confirmed 33 domestic cases and deployed five brigades to inspect 16 hotels in Quintana Roo, collecting food and water samples for laboratory analysis. Mexico also ordered testing of food and water in more than a dozen hotels and pledged to publish the results once available. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration traced a source of its own cyclosporiasis cases to a Mexican lettuce supplier, and two deaths were reported in Michigan. Ongoing investigations in Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States aim to identify the contamination source and prevent further spread.
