Mexico debates feminicide law focus on prevention
In Mexico, legislators and feminist organizations are discussing a proposed general law against feminicide sent by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. While there is general support for the initiative, members of the PRI parliamentary group, including Senator Carolina Viggiano Austria, have raised concerns that the current proposal focuses primarily on justice and sanctions rather than prevention.
Critics argue that simply increasing penalties and standardizing the crime does not address the root causes of violence against women. Proposed improvements from opposition legislators aim to strengthen the law by prioritizing prevention, protection, and the proper allocation of resources to ensure investigations are conducted effectively to achieve true justice.
