Feminicide and gender violence crisis in Mexico

Overview

Mexico continues to face a crisis regarding feminicide and widespread impunity, with legal organizations noting that 91% of crimes go unreported. While debates persist regarding President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s proposed general law against feminicide—with critics like Senator Carolina Viggiano Austria arguing it prioritizes sanctions over prevention—authorities have reported recent legal advancements in several high-profile cases.

In Morelos, a judge formally linked two women, Karen Jaqueline ‘N’ and Nataly ‘N’, to the 2022 feminicide of Margarita Ceceña Martínez. The suspects were apprehended in Guerrero following a coordinated operation involving the Mexican Army, the National Guard, and state prosecutors. The case involved the victim being doused in gasoline and set on fire during a property dispute.

In Veracruz, Jorge Eduardo “N” has been formally charged and placed in preventive detention for the September 2026 feminicide of 26-year-old María Cristina Muñoz Loya, with investigators suggesting the victim died of suffocation. Additionally, in Querétaro, Victoriano “N” was arrested in El Marqués for his alleged involvement in a 2022 feminicide in Landa de Matamoros after evading an arrest warrant for four years.

In Tamaulipas, the state continues to use the National Bank of Data and Information on Violence against Women (BANAVIM) to identify high-risk individuals. Between January and September 2026, 27 women were identified as being at high risk of feminicide, triggering special protection protocols involving the State Prosecutor's Office and the State Guard.
