Mexico debates indigenous rights and municipal representation

In Mexico, legislative and judicial discussions are intensifying regarding the rights and autonomy of indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities. Deputy Evelyn Sánchez Sánchez has proposed the creation of Indigenous Affairs Directorates in the municipalities of Mexicali, Tecate, and San Felipe in Baja California. These offices would aim to provide institutional support for culture, traditions, and community organization, while ensuring these groups have a direct channel to manage municipal requests and follow government programs.

Simultaneously, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) hosted a forum to debate the scope of indigenous self-determination. Experts and legal specialists emphasized that state decisions impacting indigenous territories, resources, and social structures must include effective community participation. Representatives from the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI) noted that the right to consultation is a collective obligation for the State when implementing legislative or administrative measures that could significantly affect these communities.
