Mexico denies triangulating Chinese products to the United States

Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard has rejected allegations that Mexico is triangulating Chinese products to the United States to evade tariffs. Speaking at InnovaFest in Querétaro, Ebrard stated that Mexico will present evidence during the USMCA review to demonstrate that its exports do not constitute a re-routing of Chinese goods.

Ebrard noted that Mexico has not identified any cases of Chinese product re-routing that exceed 1 percent of its total foreign trade. He also pointed out that the United States imports products from China 3.8 times more than Mexico does, questioning the validity of the accusations. He clarified that the re-routing of products should not be confused with direct imports intended for further processing.

Regarding the USMCA review, Ebrard expressed optimism, noting that there are “substantive agreements” in place. He highlighted the positive development of renewed dialogue between the United States and Canada. Mexico is currently preparing arguments regarding tariffs on automobiles, aluminum, and steel, as well as addressing specific issues such as strawberry trade disputes.
