Mexico Deploys 103 Firefighters to Canada for Wildfire Training

The Mexican government, through the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), dispatched a second contingent of 103 specialized forest‑fire personnel—100 combatants and three technical staff—to the province of British Columbia, Canada. The team will join real‑time incident‑management training with Canadian authorities and support ongoing wildfire‑suppression operations. This follows an earlier deployment of 104 Mexican firefighters to Thunder Bay, Ontario, responding to Canada’s request for assistance amid a season with roughly 800 active fires that have also impacted air quality in U.S. cities. The mission aims to enhance bilateral coordination, share firefighting techniques, and improve response capabilities for large‑scale wildfires in both countries.

The deployment underscores Mexico’s commitment to international cooperation on forest‑fire management and seeks to strengthen the technical skills of its own fire‑fighting forces through the experience gained in Canada.
