Mexico‑Canada wildfire assistance

In late July 2026 Mexico began a coordinated deployment of firefighting personnel to aid Canadian provinces battling widespread wildfires. On 28 July, a federal team of 104 specialists from 24 Mexican states was sent to Thunder Bay, Ontario, under a bilateral memorandum that facilitates resource exchange for forest‑fire management. The mission, overseen by Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), responded to more than 800 active fires across Canada, with smoke affecting U.S. cities.

Two days later, on 30 July, the Canadian Inter‑Agency Fire Centre requested additional support specifically from the state of Puebla. A six‑person brigade, selected for its success in halving Mexico’s burned area between 2025 and 2026, was dispatched to British Columbia. The Puebla team brought expertise in equipment handling, fire‑behavior analysis, incident‑command systems and satellite positioning, illustrating a broader Mexican effort to share both manpower and technical knowledge with Canada.

Together, the two deployments highlight an expanding bilateral cooperation in emergency response, with Mexico providing both national‑level and state‑level firefighting resources to address the escalating wildfire crisis in Canada.
