Overview

In late July 2026, Mexico began a coordinated deployment of firefighting personnel to aid Canadian provinces battling widespread wildfires. On 28 July, a federal team of 104 specialists from 24 Mexican states arrived in Thunder Bay, Ontario, under a bilateral memorandum facilitating resource exchange for forest-fire management.

Two days later, the Canadian Inter-Agency Fire Centre requested additional support from the state of Puebla. Throughout August, Mexico sent successive contingents to British Columbia and Ontario. On 3 August, 103 personnel were dispatched for training and suppression support. On 6 August, a third team of 100 firefighters and two technicians arrived. On 10 August, a fourth contingent of 102 specialists was sent, marking the first time Mexico deployed a dedicated Incident Management Team to Canada. These teams were active at the Rinker Lake, Dryden, and Atikokan complexes in Ontario, and the Big Bar complex in British Columbia.

By early September, 422 specialized firefighters—comprising 400 operational brigadiers and 22 technical and coordination staff—began returning to Mexico following the month-long mission. The deployment, which spanned Ontario, British Columbia, and Manitoba, included tasks such as clearing nearly 20,000 meters of firebreaks, identifying hundreds of hot spots, and preparing 17 helipads for aerial operations.
