Mexico destroys 293 seized firearms in Yucatán and Quintana Roo
On 11 July 2026, the Mexican Army destroyed 293 firearms seized in operations in the states of Yucatán and Quintana Roo. The destruction took place at the 7th Combat Engineers Battalion in Mérida as part of the International Day of the Destruction of Firearms. Officials reported that 85 long‑guns and 208 short‑guns were melted, along with 468 magazines and 14,970 cartridges. Only 34 of the weapons had been seized in Yucatán; the remaining 259 originated from Quintana Roo.
The operation was coordinated among civil authorities, the military, and the justice system under the State Table for the Construction of Peace and Security. Attendees included Secretary General of Government Omar Pérez Avilés, Yucatán Public Security Secretary Luis Felipe Ojeda Saidén, and Brigadier General Juan Manuel Mendoza Portillo, commander of the 32nd Military Zone. Authorities said the destruction aims to prevent illegal circulation of weapons and reduce violent crime in the region.
