The murder of Claudia Tacoronte, a 21-year-old Spanish exchange student in Cuautla, Morelos, has triggered international scrutiny regarding violence against women in Mexico. Authorities have detained a suspect known as ‘El Trompas’ and a judge has authorized criminal proceedings for femicide.

Tacoronte’s death follows a series of similar killings involving students from the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM). Since April 2025, several students, including Aylín Rodríguez, Kimberly Ramos, Karol Toledo, and Michelle Fuentes, have been victims of violence or found dead. While some cases have led to arrests, others remain without public information regarding suspects.

In response to the incident, the University of Granada has suspended academic exchanges with the UAEM. Meanwhile, Spanish MEP Antonio López-Istúriz addressed the Mexican Senate, calling for increased cooperation between Mexico and the EU to prevent such violence and ensure justice is served without impunity.
