Donald Trump says US‑Mexico‑Canada trade pact matters mainly for Mexico and Canada as US may impose new tariffs
President Donald Trump repeatedly told U.S. media that he does not care about the United States‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement (T‑MEC) and that the pact is far more important for Mexico and Canada than for the United States. He said the United States should pursue an independent trade policy and that “Mexico and Canada need us, we don’t need them.”
The United States has refused an automatic 16‑year extension of T‑MEC, opting instead for annual reviews through 2036. Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard warned that Washington could impose new tariffs on Mexico in August, citing alleged overcapacity in Mexican production. He noted that 85 % of Mexican exports enter the United States duty‑free under T‑MEC rules of origin and that Mexico seeks to preserve this preferential status while reducing tariffs on automobiles, steel and aluminum.
The United States also maintains a 10‑12.5 % additional tariff on goods from 60 countries for insufficient forced‑labour action, but Mexico’s tariff scheme remains unchanged. Negotiations for the next T‑MEC round are slated for September 2026.
