Mexico environmental groups urge protection of parks, halt tree cutting

Activists from the Movimiento Salvemos al Parque de la Juventud met with Tlaxcala's environmental authorities to draft a management program for the Parque Nacional Xicohténcatl. They secured a commitment to create a specialized brigade for green‑area care, composting and tree maintenance beginning in July, and a multi‑agency pledge to address the park’s water capture, biodiversity, temperature regulation and cultural uses. The effort follows concerns about the governor's “Ciudad de la Juventud” project and longstanding neglect.

In Hidalgo, the environmental association Biofutura called on residents and activists to stop the cutting of trees in the Centro Minero of Pachuca. The group warned that the logging, intended for an urban development, threatens species such as the tecolote llanero, tlacuaches, tuzas and cacomixtles, labeling it an ecocide. Biofutura demanded that the state government halt the project to preserve the habitat and air quality.

Both initiatives reflect wider Mexican civil‑society pressure on state agencies to protect urban ecosystems and curb development‑driven deforestation.
